Honda has stopped offering the standard versions of the CB650R and CBR650R in India. These popular 650cc four-cylinder bikes will now only come with Honda’s E-Clutch technology. This change means more ease of use but also a slightly higher price. The 2025 Honda CB650R costs Rs 9.60 lakh (ex-showroom), while the 2025 CBR650R E-Clutch model is priced at Rs 10.40 lakh (ex-showroom).

What is Honda’s E-Clutch Technology?

The E-Clutch system enables riders to operate their motorcycles without manually engaging the clutch lever, even when coming to a complete stop. Despite this automated convenience, the bike retains its clutch lever, allowing riders to use it traditionally if they prefer. The system essentially eliminates clutch engagement during gear shifts, making city riding significantly smoother and more effortless.

Key Highlights of the Updated Models:

  • Standard Variants Discontinued: As of June 2025, Honda India has removed non-E-Clutch versions of the CB650R and CBR650R from its lineup.
  • Price Increase: The E-Clutch variants are priced Rs 40,000 higher than their standard counterparts.
  • Weight Addition: The new system adds 2.8 kg to the overall weight.
  • Same Powerful Engine: Both models retain their 649cc inline 4-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, delivering 95hp at 12,000rpm and 63Nm at 9,500rpm.
  • Gear Shift Requirements: Unlike fully automatic transmission systems, riders still need to shift gears manually, ensuring precise control while riding.
  • Color Options: Available in Black and Red shades.

With increasing urban traffic congestion, manual clutch operations can be a hassle, especially in bumper-to-bumper conditions. The E-Clutch system aims to make commuting easier, reducing strain on the left hand while maintaining a sporty ride experience. This will particularly benefit motorcyclists in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai, where heavy traffic slows down daily commutes.

However, the higher price tag and additional weight might be concerns for enthusiasts who prefer a more traditional riding experience. Riders will have to test how well the system adapts to diverse Indian road conditions.

Honda’s move to discontinue standard variants and exclusively offer E-Clutch models indicates a shift toward modern riding technologies. While Indian riders still need to adjust to this innovation, it promises greater ease, comfort, and adaptability for both daily and leisure riding. Whether this change becomes widely accepted will depend on how well Honda’s E-Clutch system performs in real-world conditions.
