Mahindra Hits Back at IndiGo’s Lawsuit Over ‘6e’ Branding in BE 6e Campaign

The Mahindra BE 6e, scheduled for release in India in February 2025, faces a naming issue due to its similarity with an airline’s aviation call sign.

Just a week ago, Mahindra launched two new electric models called ‘BE’ and ‘XEV’. However, the Indian car manufacturer is now facing a legal issue with InterGlobe Aviation Limited, the parent company of IndiGo. IndiGo has taken legal action against Mahindra for trademark infringement related to the ‘6E’ branding of the Mahindra BE 6e. This is because ‘6E’ is the airline code for IndiGo flights, and this similarity might lead to confusion between the two brands.

Mahindra has responded to the legal dispute by releasing an official statement clarifying that it does not see any conflict. “Mahindra revealed its electric origin SUVs the BE 6e and XEV 9e on November 26, 2024. Mahindra has applied for trade mark registration under class 12 (vehicles) for “BE 6e” a part of its electric origin SUV portfolio.

We hence don’t see a conflict as Mahindra’s mark is “BE 6e,” not the standalone “6E.” It differs fundamentally from Indigo’s “6E,” which represents an airline, eliminating any risk of confusion. The distinct styling further emphasizes their uniqueness.

We have taken on board the concerns that InterGlobe Aviation Limited have to infringement of their goodwill, which was not our intention. We are engaged in discussions with them to find an amicable solution”.

The BE 6e’s powertrain: With the 59 kWh battery, the electric motor generates 170 kW of peak power, and with the 79 kWh battery, it goes up to 210 kW. The peak torque stays the same at 380 Nm. According to Mahindra, you can travel up to 682 km on one charge with the 79 kWh battery. If you opt for the 59 kWh battery, you can cover a distance of up to 535 km. Mahindra states that the higher-spec variant of the BE 6e can go from 0 to 100kph in just 6.7 seconds.
