Vietnamese EV Giant VinFast to Debut in India at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Expo

Vietnamese automaker VinFast is set to make a significant entry into the Indian market by showcasing its range of electric SUVs at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. This move marks VinFast’s expansion into yet another major automotive market, following its successful forays into Europe, North America, and the ASEAN regions.

VinFast has developed an impressive lineup of right-hand drive electric SUVs, including models such as the VF 3, VF 5, VF e34, VF 6, VF 7, VF 8, and VF 9. These vehicles vary in size, ranging from 3.2 to 5.1 meters in length, and cater to different vehicle and price segments globally. While the company has not yet announced which specific models will be launched in India, it is anticipated that the VF 5 and VF e34 will be among the first to hit Indian roads. These models are comparable in size to the Tata Nexon EV and the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV.

VinFast Specifications and Features

The VinFast VF 5 is a compact SUV measuring 3,967 mm in length, 1,723 mm in width, and 1,578 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,514 mm. It is powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor that generates 70 kW (94 hp) and 135 Nm of torque, allowing it to reach a top speed of 130 km/h. The vehicle is equipped with a 29.6 kWh LFP battery pack, providing a range of over 260 km (NEDC).

On the other hand, the VinFast VF e34 is slightly larger, with dimensions of 4,300 mm in length, 1,768 mm in width, and 1,615 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,611 mm. This model features a higher-output electric motor producing 110 kW (147 hp) and 242 Nm of torque, but it also has a top speed of 130 km/h. The VF e34 is fitted with a 41.9 kWh LFP battery pack, offering a range of 277 km (NEDC).

VinFast Strategic Plans for India

VinFast plans to apply for India’s E-Vehicle policy to import the VF 5 and VF e34 as Completely Built Units (CBUs) at a reduced customs duty of 15%. Additionally, the company has announced that it will import EVs in Completely Knocked-Down (CKD) kit form and conduct the final assembly at its local plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. This facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of 150,000 units, with production slated to commence by mid-2025.

VinFast’s entry into the Indian market with its range of electric SUVs is a significant development in the country’s automotive landscape.
