Royal Enfield Scram 440 Faces Engine Starting Issues; Sales Halted Since April 2025
Royal Enfield’s latest offering, the Scram 440, has hit a temporary roadblock, as the company has paused sales and bookings due to an engine-related concern. Launched in November 2024, with deliveries beginning in early 2025, the motorcycle gained attention for its upgraded performance, refined mechanics, and affordability compared to the Himalayan 450. However, a component issue has led to a cautious halt in sales since April 2025.

The Identified Issue – A Faulty Woodruff Key in the Magneto
Some Scram 440 owners reported difficulties restarting their motorcycles after turning off the engine. While the issue does not cause mid-ride stalling, it has been traced back to a malfunctioning Woodruff key in the magneto, which affects the starting mechanism. Royal Enfield has acknowledged the problem and is actively working on solutions.
Royal Enfield has already dispatched updated components to dealerships to replace the faulty parts on existing customer motorcycles. Although the number of affected units is reportedly low—estimated at around 2% of sold models—the company has opted for a precautionary approach by halting sales temporarily to ensure customer satisfaction.

Expected Resumption of Sales
Sources suggest that bookings and sales may resume by June 2025, though an official confirmation is awaited. The company has assured customers that its teams are diligently working to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, industry analysts anticipate a slight delay in review models reaching the media due to this ongoing rectification process.
Despite the current setback, the Royal Enfield Scram 440 is viewed as a promising adventure tourer, offering better braking, a six-speed gearbox, and improved handling over its predecessors. It positions itself as an appealing alternative to the Himalayan 450, which, while highly capable, might feel top-heavy for some riders.
