75 Ola Electric Outlets Closed Over Regulatory Violations in Maharashtra

Ola Electric Outlets Without Valid Documents to Be Shut Down, Says Maharashtra Govt

Ola Electric is facing significant challenges in Maharashtra as 75 of its outlets have been shut down by regional transport authorities due to the absence of valid trade certifications. The move follows a crackdown that began in March 2025, when the Maharashtra Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik, initiated actions against dealerships and showrooms violating trade certification requirements under the Central Motor Vehicles Act. Authorities found that 121 out of 146 Ola Electric outlets lacked valid certificates, prompting closures.

Despite the ongoing scrutiny, Ola Electric maintains that claims regarding its Maharashtra operations are speculative and misplaced. The company asserts that it is actively working with authorities to address concerns and ensure compliance. Ola Electric has recently launched its Roadster X lineup—an all-electric motorcycle range boasting features like brake-by-wire technology, cruise control, and reverse mode.

This regulatory action is a significant setback for Ola Electric, which has aggressively expanded its dealership network across India. With over 4,000 stores nationwide, Ola has been pushing its EV scooters as a sustainable mobility solution. However, this compliance issue highlights potential gaps in regulatory adherence.

From a broader perspective, this regulatory action highlights the importance of compliance within the electric vehicle (EV) industry. As governments increasingly focus on EV adoption, ensuring adherence to legal frameworks is essential for maintaining consumer trust and operational integrity.

In India, automotive retail businesses—including EV dealerships—are required to have a valid trade certificate to legally display and sell vehicles. This certification is crucial for handling unregistered two-wheelers, offering test rides, and moving vehicles between locations. Without proper documentation, businesses risk penalties or forced closures.
