Maruti Launches Wagon R Bioflex at Rs 7.24 Lakh: India’s First Flex-Fuel Hatchback

Maruti introduces the Wagon R Bioflex at ₹7.24 lakh, India’s first flex-fuel hatchback with E85 compatibility and commercial sector focus.

Maruti Suzuki has taken a bold step toward sustainable mobility with the launch of the Wagon R Bioflex, India’s first flex-fuel hatchback. Priced at ₹7.24 lakh (ex-showroom), the Bioflex is based on the top-spec Wagon R ZXi+ 1.2P MT and costs ₹86,000 more than its petrol-only counterpart.

Under the hood, the Wagon R Bioflex is powered by Maruti’s familiar 1.2-litre, four-cylinder K12N engine producing 91hp and 114Nm. While performance figures remain identical to the E20-compliant version, the Bioflex has been re-engineered to handle ethanol blends of up to 85 percent (E85). Key upgrades include new fuel injectors, pumps, lines, a recalibrated ECU, and an ethanol sensor.

Design-wise, the Bioflex retains the Wagon R’s tall-boy silhouette with subtle flex-fuel decals and a dedicated “Bioflex” badge. Inside, it offers the same dual-tone cabin, but Maruti has equipped it with modern features such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, six airbags, and electronic stability control (ESP).

Fuel efficiency figures are yet to be disclosed, but real-world tests with E85 fuel in other vehicles suggest a drop of around 24 percent compared to E20, even though E85 is roughly 20 percent cheaper. This trade-off will be crucial for fleet operators evaluating long-term running costs.

Currently, the Bioflex is available only for the commercial sector, positioning it as a more powerful alternative to the Wagon R Tour H3, which comes with a smaller 1.0-litre engine. However, the Bioflex’s higher price tag—₹1.35 to ₹2.25 lakh more—may limit its appeal to cost-sensitive buyers.
